Why Lease a BMW 5 Series?

Saloon or Estate (Touring)?

Both body styles share the same engines, trims, interior and technology — the difference is shape and space.

• 5 Series Estate (Touring): the five-door estate version, with a larger, more versatile boot for families, luggage or gear. BMW calls this body style the Touring, so "5 Series Touring" and "5 Series Estate" are the same car.

520i Petrol or 530e Plug-in Hybrid?

Both are automatic and share the same cabin and trims. The difference is the powertrain, running costs and company-car appeal.

520i M Sport (petrol)

A 2.0-litre turbo petrol with mild-hybrid assistance, around 208bhp, and 0–62mph in about 7.5 seconds (a little more in the Estate). The simpler, lower-list-price choice, best if you can't easily charge a plug-in hybrid or do mostly longer journeys.

530e M Sport (plug-in hybrid)

A 2.0-litre petrol paired with an electric motor and a 22.1kWh battery, giving around 299bhp, 0–62mph in about 6.3 seconds, and an official electric-only range of up to around 60 miles (WLTP). You charge it by plugging in at home or on the public network. Best if you can charge regularly and want lower fuel costs and lower company-car tax — many shorter trips can be done on electric power alone.

The BMW 5 Series as a Company Car

The 530e plug-in hybrid is a popular company car because Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) company-car tax is based partly on CO2 emissions, and the 530e's official CO2 figure is far lower than the petrol 520i. That can mean a significantly lower monthly tax bill for a business-user or company-car driver, though the exact BIK rate depends on the vehicle's emissions, its P11D value and the current tax year — so check the individual deal and your own tax position.
