The Smart range: #1, #3 and #5
Smart now offers three all-electric SUVs. Here is how they compare, so you can pick the right one.
Smart #1 (compact electric SUV)
The core Smart. The #1 is a compact five-seat electric SUV with an official range of up to around 270 miles, brisk performance and a genuinely premium, tech-led cabin. It is the natural first choice for most buyers who want a stylish, city-friendly EV that can still handle longer trips.
Smart #3 (coupe-styled electric SUV)
Mechanically similar to the #1 but with a lower, sportier coupe-SUV roofline and a slightly longer range in some versions (up to around 270 miles). Choose the #3 if you prefer the sleeker look and don't mind marginally less headroom in the back.
Smart #5 (larger electric SUV)
The biggest and newest Smart, a mid-size electric SUV with more space, a bigger battery option and the longest range in the range (up to around 366 miles on the largest battery). Choose the #5 if you need more room for family and luggage, or simply want the most range.
Every model is also available in a high-performance Brabus version with dual-motor all-wheel drive for serious acceleration.
Why lease a Smart?
Leasing is a simple, low-commitment way into a brand-new electric SUV. You pay a fixed monthly rental, avoid the large upfront cost of buying, and hand the car back at the end of the term, so you are never exposed to what a used EV is worth down the line, which matters in a fast-moving electric market.
Smart suits leasing particularly well:
It is an all-electric brand. Every current Smart is fully electric, so you get low running costs, no fuel bills and low company-car tax.
Mercedes design, Geely engineering. The current cars pair a premium, well-finished Mercedes-designed cabin with Geely's proven electric platform (shared with the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X).
Strong safety. The #1 and #3 both hold 5-star Euro NCAP ratings, with the #1 scoring an outstanding 96% for adult occupant protection.
Three sizes to choose from. From the compact #1 to the larger #5, there is a Smart to suit city drivers, couples and families.
Smart range, electric range and charging
Because every Smart is fully electric, here is the practical picture on range and charging.
Range. Official WLTP range runs from around 270 miles on the #1 and #3 up to around 366 miles on the largest-battery #5. As with any EV, real-world range is usually a little lower, especially in cold weather or at motorway speeds, but all three comfortably cover typical weekly driving on a single charge.
Charging. The current Smart range supports fast charging:
Home wallbox (7kW): an overnight charge for everyday use.
Rapid public charging: the #1 and #3 support up to around 150kW DC, enough for a 10 to 80% top-up in roughly 30 minutes on a fast enough charger. The #5 charges faster still on its 800-volt system.
22kW AC: the #1 and #3 also supports faster 22kW AC charging, useful at destination chargers.
Most models also offer vehicle-to-load (V2L), letting you power external devices from the car's battery.
Range and charging figures are official or indicative and vary by model, battery, weather and driving style. Check the individual deal for the exact version.
Personal vs business leasing on a Smart
You can lease any Smart either way.
Personal leasing (PCH) is for private drivers. You pay a fixed monthly rental that includes VAT, so the price you see is the price you pay.
Business leasing (BCH) is for companies, sole traders and partnerships. Prices are shown excluding VAT, and VAT-registered businesses can often reclaim part of the VAT on the rentals, depending on how the car is used. As fully electric cars, all three Smarts sit in a low Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) company-car tax band, which makes them efficient business and salary-sacrifice choices.
Both options appear on every deal. Use the Personal / Business toggle to switch between them.
What happened to the Smart Fortwo and Forfour?
A quick, honest answer, because these are still common searches.
The petrol and EQ electric versions of the Smart Fortwo (including the Fortwo Cabrio) and the Smart Forfour have been discontinued. Smart stopped making its traditional small city cars when it became an all-electric brand under the Geely and Mercedes joint venture.
If you were looking for a small, city-friendly Smart, the closest current equivalent is the Smart #1, a compact electric SUV that keeps the brand's city-car spirit but with a lot more space, range and technology. It is available to lease on this page.
About Smart: from city cars to electric SUVs
Smart began in the 1990s as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, with the idea of a tiny, clever city car. The two-seat Fortwo, launched in 1998, became its icon, later joined by the four-seat Forfour and electric EQ versions.
In 2019, Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese group Geely formed a new joint venture to relaunch Smart as an all-electric brand. The result is today's range: the #1, #3 and #5. These are a complete departure from the old city cars, larger electric SUVs designed by Mercedes and built on Geely's electric platform, aimed at drivers who want a premium, tech-led EV without going to a mainstream badge.
