8 Ruggedised Vehicle Versions Ever

It might be stating the obvious but not all versions are all-wheel-drive, despite the 4x4 wannabe looks. So if the terrain really does get tough, you might end-up a little embarrassed while being towed out of a muddy field. (That said, if you want to increase the winter capability of any car, all-season or winter tyres could be a sensible option.)

Fuel efficiency is likely to be slightly impaired on a ruggedised model. It’s taller, extra plastic cladding adds both weight and wind resistance, and the higher ride means greater air turbulence beneath the vehicle, all contributing to higher fuel consumption.

Handling will suffer too. The taller, rugged versions have a higher centre of gravity which reduces stability (even if only marginally) and is less good when changing direction. The suppler suspension also makes for less crisp handling.

And if we’re brutally honest, all the plastic bits are as scuffable as paintwork. But they look the business and do help differentiate the models so often form part of the appeal.

Should I go ruggedised?

The extra practicality - even if sometimes only marginal - plus the increased comfort wins out for us. Here are some of the latest…

1. Toyota Aygo X

This urban warrior is due to come to a town near you in 2022.

2. Toyota Yaris Cross

The Aygo X isn’t Toyota’s first ruggedised model: the Yaris Cross is available today, with its chunky styling.

3. Škoda Octavia Scout

Traditionally, Škoda has added these more rugged models right across its range. Currently, just the Octavia Scout is available - for the emergency services only - but we’re sure we’ll see the name back on other models soon.

4. Audi Allroad

Audi mixes its Allroad sub-brand with pleasing Quattro name for current versions of the A4 and A6.

5. Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Alltrack is Volkswagen’s more tough label and is currently available on the Golf, which sits 19mm taller than a regular Golf.

6. Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

Whether you’d actually want to take your Porsche off the tarmac is another question but you can still choose the tougher-looking Cross Turismo.

7. Volvo Cross Country

Short for Active Crossover, the Fiesta and Focus Active X models have been subjected to the Active X treatment for increased practicality.

8. Kia XCeed

Last but by all means not least, one of the more elegant crossovers in this list, the Kia XCeed. A favourite in the world of ruggedised vehicles.
