So, let’s have a look if you are able to lease a car for a family member, what it entails, and the things you need to consider before getting your family member set up on the road.

Leasing for a Family Member

You can lease a car for a family member, but there are a few things you will need to put in place and understand before doing so. So, let’s take a look at each step together and get your family member set up on the road, safely and legally.

Things to Consider: Family Leasing

Policy

When agreeing to your lease with our dealership, you will need to let us know if who will be driving the car so this can be included in the lease agreement. Unfortunately, if your lease doesn’t allow you to have other drivers on the lease and something happens, you may find yourself in a difficult situation. No need to worry, our expert team will ask these questions during the initial stages of the leasing process.

Responsibility: If you are leasing a car for someone else, whether it be a spouse or family member, you as the named driver on the lease will be responsible for the car. Therefore, you will need to consider that payments are still being made whether you or your family member is paying for them.

Insurance: You will need to make sure that you, the lesser, are the named driver on the insurance policy and responsible for the car. Your family member or spouse will need to be added to the policy as an additional driver in order for them to legally be able to drive it.

Driving License: According to UK Government Law, under the Road Traffic Act 1988, “if you are stopped whilst driving a vehicle of any class on a road in the UK and cannot present a valid driving license, you are committing an offense and as such will face a penalty”. Due to the nature of circumstances changing, the nature of the offense may sometimes be worse than others, and in turn, a heavier penalty will be issued. Penalties can include, but are not subject to:

  • 3 – 6 penalty points

  • Up to £1,000 fine

  • An unlimited fine (if there is no insurance)

Length of Contract: Before leasing a car for a family member, it is wise to consider the length of the lease agreement. Whether you are looking for a short-term lease of 12 or 18 months or a long-term leasing contract, by considering this beforehand you will have clarity of the lease deal and responsibility ahead of time.
